Dahlonega calls its holiday season Old Fashioned Christmas, and it lasts longer than most. The town lights its square the day after Thanksgiving and keeps events going almost daily through the first week of January. The organizing nonprofit traces the tradition to 1963.

The square is the whole show. The 1836 courthouse that holds the Gold Museum sits in the middle, and shops, restaurants and tasting rooms line all four sides, so you can park once and walk to everything.

The Visitors Bureau says the tree lighting will be at 6 p.m. “this year,” in front of the Visitors Center. Roads around the square close for the lighting from the afternoon into the evening, so park off the square before 3 p.m.

The organizer posts exact times for Santa visits, caroling and the parade on dahlonegachristmas.com. Check it the week you go; times can change.

Lighting of the Square

This is the night most people come for. The square fills before dark, the white lights go on across the square and the tree is lit at 6 p.m. Carriage rides start the same evening and run at night through the season.

Expect crowds. Black Friday is one of the busiest nights of the year downtown. If you want dinner on the square, book a table for 7:30 p.m. or later, or eat early before the lighting starts.

The parade

The 2026 Dahlonega Christmas Parade is on Saturday, Dec. 12, in the historic district, with Santa in it. The organizer’s schedule lists the start time. Roads on the route close shortly before it begins and the parade goes on rain or shine.

If you only have one weekend, the Dec. 12 trip gives you the parade and a lit square in a single day. Helen holds its own Christmas parade that evening at 6 p.m., about 40 minutes away.

Santa and the mailbox

Santa visits the square on scheduled days, and the organizer says the photos are free. Bring your own phone or camera.

Kids can drop a letter to Santa in a special mailbox at the Visitors Center, starting Nov. 27, 2026. The Visitors Center is at 13 S. Park St., on the square, and has maps and event information. Call (706) 864-3711 or (800) 231-5543.

What else to do in Dahlonega in December

  • The Gold Museum. The Dahlonega Gold Museum is in the old courthouse at the center of the square. Georgia State Parks runs it; check holiday closures on its page before you go.
  • Wine tasting. Lumpkin County is wine country, and several tasting rooms sit on or near the square. The Visitors Bureau lists wine sampling among the December events.
  • Shopping. The shops on the square are mostly independent: gifts, clothing, books, sweets and outdoor gear.
  • Theater. The Visitors Bureau lists live Christmas theater during the season. Check the event calendar on dahlonega.org for shows and tickets.

Getting there and parking

Dahlonega is about 50 minutes east of Ellijay and roughly an hour and 15 minutes north of Atlanta without traffic. Parking near the square fills on lighting night and parade day. Arrive early, or plan to walk a few blocks.

Compare it with other towns

Blue Ridge has the Santa train and a Saturday parade on Thanksgiving weekend. Helen leans Bavarian, with a Christmas market. Our North Georgia Christmas towns guide puts all of them side by side.
